Your user profile is corrupted. Hopefully when you say "the admin acct is ...the only one on the computer" you don't have XP Pro or Media Center and were not using the built-in Administrator as your user account. If you have XP Home, boot into Safe Mode and you'll be able to access the built-in Administrator account. If you have XP Pro/Media Center do Ctrl-Alt-Del at the Welcome Screen to get the classic logon box. Type in "Administrator" (without the quotes) for the user name and leave the password field blank. Once logged into the built-in Administrator you can create a new user account for yourself and copy the data from your old account to the new one. After you have all your stuff, you can delete the old corrupted account. If you have XP Pro or Media Center and *were* using the built-in Administrator for your daily work and it really is the only one on the system (and now you know why this isn't a good user setup), then you can try recovering per the instructions below. If they don't work you'll need to back up your data from outside of Windows and then try a repair install. If the repair install fails, do a clean install/factory restore of Windows. I would retrieve any data that didn't make it into your regular backups first. If you need more help, please post back with the missing information as to what version of XP you have and what user account you were actually using.Corrupted Registry Recovery - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q307545 MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I have a related issue but with a different twist. If I boot to XP Pro (includes all current security updates) but don't come back to logon before the screen saver activates then the logon changes to one where only an Admin can logon. I would think that wouldn't be a problem as I'm the only user and am the Admin as well. However, my User account as well as Admin account don't work. The system won't accept accept any login. The screen saver option is 'Blank' with 'On resume, password protect' checked. I've tried to set a password thru the screen saver settings but the system informs me that there are no options to set. What gives?
